Los Angeles Lakers Rumors: Jason Kidd’s Top Assistant Listed as 1 of Potential Darvin Ham Replacements, Per Insider
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Lakers have started their head coaching search, and they’ve already listed several names to replace Darvin Ham, who was fired by the team last week after two seasons.

According to Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times, current Mavericks assistant Sean Sweeney is one of the contenders for the Los Angeles Lakers job alongside Los Angeles Clippers head coach Ty Lue and former NBA player JJ Redick, among others.

“But while there’s a desire to find someone with experience, the Lakers, sources say, aren’t solely focused on that and seem to be open to speaking with candidates from multiple coaching pedigrees,” wrote Woike in his mailbag article.

“Yes, that means coaches with established records in the big seat on the sidelines. But it also means consideration of some of the most highly regarded assistant coaches, including those still working in the postseason such as Denver’s David Adelman, Minnesota’s Micah Noria, Boston’s Charles Lee, and Dallas’ Sean Sweeney,” he added.

Sean Sweeney could be an under-the-radar hire for the Los Angeles Lakers

Los Angeles Lakers fans should not look down on Sean Sweeney if he gets the head coach job because he has been in the league for 11 years and counting.

Sweeney started his NBA coaching career as an assistant for the Brooklyn Nets during the 2013-14 campaign. After that, he had stops with the Milwaukee Bucks and Detroit Pistons before reuniting with Jason Kidd in Dallas for the 2021-22 season.

When the Charlotte Hornets and the Utah Jazz had coaching vacancies in 2022, according to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, Sean Sweeney drew interest, as he had interviews with them before they hired other candidates.

At the moment, Sean Sweeney’s focus is coaching the Dallas Mavericks , who are down 0-1 against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round of the 2024 NBA playoffs.
